We are more certain than ever before that we would not have become who we are today without our faith in God and the help of others. With guidance from many influential individuals and establishments, we were given the opportunity to realize our true potential. In today’s climate, we have a sense of urgency to continue the chain of empowerment and invest in the future of our youth by providing the blueprint necessary for ALL of our children to become positive, contributing citizens.
Mourning Family Foundation was created to inspire youth through advocacy, education and enrichment services, and allows donors with varied interests in children’s issues, the benefit of giving to multiple charities from their one contribution. Since 1997, Mourning Family Foundation has raised over $25 million for various programs that aid in the development of children and their families, particularly those in socioeconomically challenged communities.
In 2002, we launched Honey Shine, Inc. a mentoring program that empowers young girls to shine as women by instilling the values of knowledge, responsibility, community and faith through biweekly workshops and an annual summer camp. With the help of donors, in 2003 we opened the Overtown Youth Center, a program designed to deliver enrichment services that foster hope and promote lifelong learning and success for inner-city youth and citizens.
We are proud of what we have accomplished, and would not have been able to do it without the help of our many sponsors, donors, staff, and remarkable volunteers. They are the backbone of this organization and have become an irreplaceable part of our family.
Although we have had much success in our respective professions – Alonzo is a seven time NBA All-Star and Hall of Fame inductee, and Tracy is an accomplished author and broadcast journalist – we know that our true legacy will be in our charitable pursuits. We live by the mantra that “to whom much is given, much will be required.” We believe that by giving back to our community, we will set a solid foundation for generations to come.
