Alonzo & Tracy Mourning Introduces the Mourning Family Foundation Educational Scholarship Fund for Miami Dade County Graduating Seniors.

MIAMI, FL, July 7, 2016 – Alonzo and Tracy Mourning have launched a new educational initiative, the Mourning Family Foundation Educational Scholarship Fund to benefit deserving high school students seeking to continue their education at a four-year college or university of their choice.

The couple hosted a reception announcing this endeavor with the help of friend and longtime supporter Amaury Piedra, General Manager of the Shelborne Wyndham Grand South Beach who has known the couple for over 19 years, since the inception of Zo’s Summer Groove, and generously donated the space for the initial kick-off for the Educational Scholarship Fund. Local business leaders and community leaders attended the event to pledge their support for the fund which will directly impact eligible deserving students from under resourced communities in Miami Dade County.

The Mourning Family Foundation has raised over $20 million for various programs that advocate for and aid in the development of children and families. Currently the Mourning Family Foundation serves over 700 youth and young adults from the age 8 – 25 years of age and growing. Recently the foundations, Honey Shine, Inc., founded by Tracy Wilson Mourning expanded to Los Angeles, CA and Dallas, TX, inspiring young girls in underserved communities in those areas.

Along with the Shelborne Wyndham Grand South Beach, the Sarsaparilla Club, Chef’s Janine Booth and Jeff McInnis, culinary curators at the South Beach hot spot treated guest to an array of tapas items from the menu such as, Carrot & Beat Tartare to Pork Belly Bacon Steam Buns, to Drunken Deviled Eggs, and more throughout the evening.

The Florida Restaurant and Lodging Association presented the couple with the first corporate donation to kick-start the fund, which will benefit graduating seniors from the foundation’s Overtown Youth Center and Honey Shine, Inc. educational and mentoring programs.
