Miami-Dade Students Participate in “Zo’s Youth Summit” Discussing Current Events

Inside the American Airlines Arena, groups of high school students from Miami-Dade County took part in an important discussion that left no topic untouched.

Hundreds of teenagers from Norland, American and Booker T. Washington and many other schools attended the Zo’s Winter Groove Youth Summit this morning.

The event is hosted annually by former Miami Heat star Alonzo Mourning and his wife, Tracy , with today’s topics ranging from youth dealing with social media, gun violence and the upcoming election.

Panelists including Sabrina Fulton, activist and mother of Trayvon Martin, as well as members of the Miami Heat charitable fund.

“It’s actually cool to see the other high schools here and knowing that you’re not alone,” said Joana Bassort, a senior at North Miami Senior High. “Everyone else is trying be on the same path as you, so it’s good to be all together.”

The Mourning Family Foundation and Miami-Dade County Public Schools will be hosting an entire weekend of events for the community upcoming in January – including another summit as well as a 5k run/walk, sports clinics and the annual comedy show. For more information, click on this link.
